The victim of a botched adult circumcision was awarded $1.8 million in damages by a Fulton County State Court jury that found that urologist Dr. David Cornell of the Circumcision Center in Atlanta improperly performed this delicate medical procedure. The case was tried by attorneys Michael Neff and David Llewellyn.
Men choose to opt for adult circumcision for a variety of medical or lifestyle related reasons. Some men feel as though they are different for not having been circumcised as a child. Some have read medical studies (in Kenya and Uganda) have shown that adult circumcision can reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
Yet like with any medical procedure, there are serious risks involved with adult circumcision. When a medical practitioner botches an adult circumcision, complications include:
• Buried penis
• Chordee (characterized by an abnormal downward bend of the penis)
• Narrowing of the urethra
• Difficulty with urination
• Poor cosmetic appearance
• Skin bridges or tags on the penis
Aside from the health risks, botched adult circumcisions can also cause psychological damage and loss of confidence due to altered appearance or loss of sexual function in an otherwise healthy male. Unfortunately, adult males are not the only victims of botched circumcision. Recently $10.7 million and $2.3 million judgments were handed down in cases involving botched circumcisions of infants.
